With now over 10,000 creative experts, SSSHAKE is growing fast and establishing itself as the most inclusive network for creatives — a safe place made by creatives for creatives. This is the result of years of passion and hardwork and it’s time for us to share our story.

The beginning of our adventure

It all started back in 2016 in London, when our co-founder, Valentine, pinpointed a major problem within the creative industries: they're often insular, making creative connections and collaborations across industries tricky. And when success in your creative career depends heavily on your network, it becomes even more problematic. Your network is what's going to enable opportunities, experience, and finally, expertise and legitimacy as a creative professional. So Valentine decided that to truly tap into the potential of the creative industries, and of creativity as a whole, she needed to direct her attention to something dear to her heart: the power of network.

The Creative Gatherings

Following her vision, we called upon all our friends to help put together the very first SSSHAKE Creative Gathering  — a laid-back networking event for creatives from all industries to meet, exchange, and learn from each other.

The first Creative Gathering at Netil 360, London

From that lucky sunny London afternoon (for those of you who know English weather, you know that doesn't happen every day!), with only just 30 attendees, things started to move faster than anyone could have hoped for. Several Creative Gatherings later, hundreds of eager, like-minded creatives from all industries (from photography, to film, music, illustration, dance, and more) were all coming together under one roof. The love for creative expression in the community is clear. And the eagerness to embrace new ideas and start new projects is even more apparent in the SSSHAKE network. The willingness of the community to try new things, learn new skills, and meet new people is inspiring, and it's in following that mindset that, as creatives, we can work together to create and tell stories in a more impactful way, truly uncovering the potential of creative expression.

Creative collaborations have always been key to our own personal and creative development, and it's something we've always found great value in.

“Collaborations are not just there to fill a gap when you are missing a certain skill or practice for your project. Collaboration is about making the other person even stronger. I think that's the core value of true collaboration. But, you cannot just collaborate with anybody. You have to have some sort of similar understanding, similar backgrounds, similar vibes. Otherwise a collaboration won't lead to the true, beautiful benefits and connection that it can actually bring. Yes, you can work with a random person and create what you want to create, but that doesn't make you any better, nor does it make the other person better. You can create something, but that doesn't mean that the creation has meaning.” Jan, SSSHAKE Creative Community London.

Whilst we definitely don't endorse working for free on commercial, profit-led projects, our experiences working with other creatives, coming together to each bring our individual assets to the table to create something bigger and better than would have been possible alone, were truly essential to shaping our identities. Those experiences enabled us to strengthen our creative outlook and push ourselves further in our practices. And with the three ‘S’ of SSSHAKE standing for Share Some Skills, it's no surprise that collaboration, support and kindness are at the heart of everything we do at SSSHAKE.

Bringing our essence to the digital world

The need to connect creatives from different industries resonated with so many that we decided to launch a Kickstarter campaign to bring the essence of the Creative Gatherings to the digital world. We wanted to give every creative the possibility to connect with others whenever they needed to, not just at our events. And so, we designed the first SSSHAKE app, a tool for local creatives to interact and meet. Thanks to hundreds of amazing backers, the SSSHAKE networking app was born, connecting local creatives to help foster unexpected collaborations.

Growing around the world

For the next two years, our community grew organically across Europe and overseas, with the birth of SSSHAKE creative communities around the world, from Paris and Lyon in France; to Berlin, Germany; Brussels, Belgium; and Montreal, Canada. And it's all thanks to our passionate ambassadors (Audrey Mann - Berlin, Yoann De Geetere - Montreal, Clarisse - Brussels; Alice Sogno - Lyon) that we've been able to spread the SSSHAKE movement across borders. Our ambassador network keeps growing, so get in touch if you want to bring SSSHAKE to your city!

The first Creative Gathering in Lyon, France, at Super5

SSSHAKE Productions

As our community continued to grow, we started receiving more and more requests from entrepreneurs who needed help bringing their stories to life. We had had some bad experiences with agencies in the past and wanted to create something new, where we could offer cheaper production rates to our clients, whilst actually giving more back to the creatives we hire. At the end of the day, most agency fees are overhead costs, where you end up paying for the salaries of the agency's employees, and in the end, very little actually goes to funding the production.

Our model is quite simple: we use our experience as creatives to write thorough briefs, as well as our experience managing creative projects to hire the best creative freelancer for the particular project. Then, we simply trust the freelancer to do what they do best: create. No mico-managing, no crazy overheads, no hidden costs. If you don't have the expertise or time to hire a creative yourself, don't hesitate to request a quote.

Behind the scenes from our project with Span

It isn’t easy to make a living from your art

After working in the creative industries for more than two years, it became clear that creatives' needs went far beyond networking. It's not easy to make a living from your art, and if you can't make ends meet with your creative practice, there's little chance you have time for personal projects and collaborations. Providing a safe space for creatives to meet, exchange and grow their networks simply wasn't enough to help creatives keep doing what they do the best. We decided to invest our efforts in making creative freelancing easy and more profitable for all parties involved.

Freelancing is genuinely a beautiful way to work, giving you flexibility in your schedule and the freedom to work on projects and subjects that you're actually passionate about. It has huge potential to enable you to be happy AND financially stable. But currently, it feels a bit difficult to have your cake and eat it too. At SSSHAKE, our mission is to establish a new standard for creative freelancing, to not only make it a viable career path, but so you never have to choose between your passion and putting food on the table.

And with such an ambitious objective, we needed all the help we could get. Amalia had been our official event photographer for years and our mission resonated so much with her that she decided to join the team full time.

SSSHAKE Beta

After months of research and chats with creative freelancers from all industries, we realised what the creative world was missing: a platform dedicated to facilitating creative freelance hiring. With our new platform, you can receive paid freelance jobs (as well as unpaid collaboration opportunities) specific to your creative practice, straight to your inbox. And on the flip side, when you start a new project, you can call-out for creative freelancers to help bring your ideas to life, too, so you can tell your story with a bang! Built from scratch by our second co-founder, Tiphaine, SSSHAKE beta is available to everyone, everywhere

As creatives ourselves, we know it can be daunting to both, find the right creative for a project, and start a creative freelance career. For both the hirer and hiree, the creative freelancing world can feel isolated and unsupportive, but we're here to change that. So we created a platform to demystify the process, to make hiring creative freelancers easy and accessible

With your help, we are creating the easiest-to-use and most collaborative marketplace for creative work. More than just connecting talented creatives, we want to facilitate creative freelancing and enable projects to reach their full potential. But we can only make it happen with your help and feedback, which will continue to shape and develop SSSHAKE.

Join our global network of independent creative freelancers and passionate entrepreneurs, and let's bring your story to life!
